Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)

BRONCHO PULMONARY DYSPLASIA is a condition which occasionally occurs in premature infants who have needed respiratory support from a ventilator. Premature infants may develop "respiratory distress syndrome" where the immature lungs are stiffer than normal or recurrent apnoea (stopping breathing) due to the immature brain's ability to control regular breathing. In both cases, baby will need to be ventilated.

In most cases these problems resolve with time, however in a small minority of cases it may be necessary to continue with oxygen for weeks or even months.
